Climate Ready Barcelona: Turning heat data into actionable insights

Barcelona is increasingly affected by heat stress due to climate change and the urban heat island effect. The Climate Ready Barcelona project helps civilians better anticipate and adapt to rising temperatures and related energy challenges by making complex climate data accessible and understandable. Nazka partnered with research organisation CIMNE to develop a map application that translates advanced urban heat models into clear, meaningful indicators for the general public. In this project, Mapframe — our in-house mapping framework — was opened up for external use for the very first time. With targeted support from our team, CIMNE was able to quickly build and maintain their own comprehensive mapping platform, featuring heat vulnerability maps, climate projections and a wide range of heat-related indices. Seeing an external partner bring Mapframe to life in such a meaningful project makes us genuinely proud. Climate Ready Barcelona perfectly shows what becomes possible when strong tools and motivated people come together — and it motivates us even more to keep making Mapframe available for impactful projects that truly make a difference on the ground.
