B-LiFE: Biological Light Fieldable laboratory for Emergencies

With the support of ESA, B-LiFE (Biological Light Fieldable laboratory for Emergencies) brings diagnostics close to crisis areas with a high-tech mobile lab. Since 2015, Nazka Mapps has been developing the map components for B-LiFE, in order to visualise the situation on the terrain in near-real time. In 2020 the application was thoroughly revised. The map integrates spatial data like satellite images, location of hospitals or airports and field samples with mapping services like routing and map measurements. The application also has a console with statistics on the current epidemic, to allow stakeholders to assess the situation in near-real-time. B-LiFE is certified as part of the European Medical Corps and can thus be mobilized for any type of emergency with health consequences, at short notice. This was already the case during the Ebola crisis in 2015, where it was deployed at a treatment centre in N’Zerekore, Guinea. More recently in 2020 the laboratory was sent to Piemonte in Italy, to support healthcare workers, civil protection volunteers and members of the emergency services in their battle against COVID-19.
