In late 2024 and early 2025, 14 municipal mergers took place in Belgium, with major changes to the administrative division.
In Limburg, we have four mergers: Kortessem is incorporated into Hasselt, Bilzen joins with Hoeselt, Tongeren with Borgloon and Tessenderlo with Ham. In Flemish Brabant, Pajottegem arises as a merger of Galmaarden, Gooik and Herne. In East Flanders, Lokeren retains its name after the merger with Moerbeke, as does Lochristi with Wachtebeke. In addition, Nazareth and De Pinte join, as do Merelbeke and Melle.
A notable change in Antwerp is the expansion of the city with a 10th district: Borsbeek. At the same time, Zwijndrecht leaves the province and joins Beveren and Kruibeke in East Flanders. In West Flanders, Ruiselede and Wingene together now form the municipality of Wingene, while Meulebeke and Tielt become Tielt. In Luxembourg, Bastogne and Bertogne merge to become the largest municipality in Belgium.
At Nazka Mapps, we updated our Boundaries-API to reflect all of these changes correctly. In addition to the new municipal, district, and provincial boundaries, several NIS codes have also been updated. This ensures that maps, applications, and analyses that use municipal divisions are kept up-to-date.
This dataset is freely available as open data and provides accurate and up-to-date boundary information for developers to use in maps, GIS applications and other location-based services. This update allows users to integrate the latest administrative division into their projects without any effort on their part.

Are you looking for up-to-date information on municipal, district and provincial boundaries for the whole of Europe, including population figures and surface areas? You can easily find everything in one place via the Boundaries-API. The data comes from different sources and has different levels of accuracy. Our European dataset (data by Open Maps for Europe) is created at a scale of 1:250 000. In Belgium, the FPS Finance (AAPD) maintains open data on administrative boundaries and statistical sectors at a scale of 1:10 000, allowing the user to also request these more detailed polygons for Belgium.
