Global Wind Atlas becomes multilingual

This month a new version of the Global Wind Atlas became available. This time we focused on the accessibility of the tool in terms of language by adding a translation component. Apart from English, the website is now also available in the other official languages of the United Nations: Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic and Russian.

When opening GWA, the website will automatically select a language based on the browser settings of the user. At all times, the user is also able to change the language by means of a dropdown menu in the navigation bar. All text changes dynamically, reloading the webpage is not necessary.

Nazka mapps has integrated the multilingual functionality in an efficient way in the code, to make sure future translations can be added easily. In addition, also the reading direction of the complete website changes when selecting the Arabic language.

The Global Wind Atlas is a free, web-based application developed to help policymakers and investors identify potential high-wind areas for wind power generation virtually anywhere in the world, and perform preliminary calculations. The tool facilitates online queries and provides freely downloadable datasets based on the latest input data and modelling methodologies. In addition to a completely revised underlying dataset, the GWA website has been reimagined from the bottom up by Nazka Mapps, under contract to DTU Wind Energy, and funded by Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), a multi-donor trust fund administered by The World Bank and supported by 13 official bilateral donors.
